Q

How do you convert into scientific notation?

A

Move the . to make the # between 1-10
How many spaces did . move? It’s the exponent
Multiply by 10 to exponent
- If original # was whole, the exponent is positive
- If original # was a decimal, the exponent is negative

Q

How do you convert out of scientific notation?

A

If the exponent on 10 is positive, move . to the right
If the exponent on 10 is negative, move . to the left
Use 0s to fill in the spaces from the original number to the new .

Q

What are the exponent properties?

A
x^a+x^b = x^a+b
(x^a)^b = x^a*b
(x-y)^a = x^a+x^b
(x/y)^a = x^a/y^a
x^a/x^b = x^a-b
x^-a = 1/x^a
1/x^-a = x^a
x^0 = 1
