Unit 4 - Exponents Flashcards
What is the growth and decay formula?
y = A(1 +/- r)^x A = starting value r = rate in decimal form x = # of time periods
How do you convert into scientific notation?
Move the . to make the # between 1-10
How many spaces did . move? It’s the exponent
Multiply by 10 to exponent
- If original # was whole, the exponent is positive
- If original # was a decimal, the exponent is negative
How do you convert out of scientific notation?
If the exponent on 10 is positive, move . to the right
If the exponent on 10 is negative, move . to the left
Use 0s to fill in the spaces from the original number to the new .
How do you multiply scientific notation?
Multiply the “numbers”
Multiply the powers of 10
Adjust exponent so 1st number is 1-10
How do you divide scientific notation?
Divide the “numbers”
Divide the powers of 10
Adjust exponent so 1st number is 1-10
What are the exponent properties?
x^a+x^b = x^a+b (x^a)^b = x^a*b (x-y)^a = x^a+x^b (x/y)^a = x^a/y^a x^a/x^b = x^a-b x^-a = 1/x^a 1/x^-a = x^a x^0 = 1
