Unit 4 Chap 16 Flashcards
Vision for Canada
Canada used to be British North America and it was controlled by Britain in 1841 the British government merged upper Canada, which was the Anglophone and lower Canada, which was Francophone and they renamed upper Canada Canada West and lower Canada Canada east That whole province had one legislative assembly, which had one equal representation from Canada West in Canada East however less people lived in Canada West English was the only language allowed in the legislature because the British wanted Francophone to assembly into angle for culture
Durham report
Louis Hippolyte La Fontaine, which represented Canada east and Robert Baldwin, which represents in Canada West join forces to demand responsible government
They wanted a government that would only answer to people of Canada, not only to the colonies, British governor
Both wanted the language and culture of Canada’s. Frank wants to survive.
New vision for canada
In the 1860s led by John a MacDonald and George Etti Cartier their goal was an independent Canada, the one that preserved its British heritage and promoted the language and culture of its microphone citizens
In 1866 the US passed and act proposing that US should take over a British colonies in North America. This was because the economy was suffering because Britain and US had restricted trade with the colonies. This caused a flood of English speaking immigrants settled in Canada West, who meant that angle phones were beginning to outnumber Francophones in the province of Canada
In 1867 Canada was created and it was made up before provinces Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia
Evolving visions of canada
BC then wanted to join confederation in 1871 because I promise that a railway would be built connecting Canada east and West Coasts
Once the railway was finished, Canada could begin to secure and populate the west, the railway were transport people and supplies, but the newcomers would need land
Challenges and opportunities for francophones
The percentage of phones in Canada was shrinking. They spent that power and influencer Francophones in Canada began to decline, leaving them with three option
Accept it
Promote Quebec as a strong self-governing province within Canada
Promote a vision of sovereign so separate Quebec
In 1968 Pierre, Trudeau was elected Prime Minister although he was Québecois, his vision was a strong United Canada. His government pass the official languages act in 1969 to protect the language languages rights of all Francophones in Canada.
Government policy
Canada is a pluralistic society, which means it is built up of many groups coexisting. Canada is also a democratic nation so with this national identity is often hard to define there will be contentions disagreements, and sometimes limited support. It is deemed that a strong federal government is able to protect and promote the interest of all individuals and freedoms has the government of Canada been able to develop canada’s identity
Official languages act
This was created to bring/increase harmony in Canada based on the fines of royal commission of bilingualism and biculturalism. The act recommended the English in French be the official languages in Canada, but also promote other heritage languages (non-French and non-English groups.)
Multiculturalism act
This was aimed to build an inclusive Canada by supporting pluralism
Recognizing and promote the understanding that multiculturalism reflects the culture and racial diversity of Canadian society and acknowledges the freedom of all members of Canadian society to preserve enhance and share their culture heritage
Immigration issues, undesirable, komagata maru
Chinese welcomed to come and build the railroad but afterword were subject to a head tax by 1904. It was 519 23. The government banned almost all immigration from china
At the beginning of the 20th century until the 1930s immigration policy became much more restrictive. This was considered the undesirables which were black immigrants from the US Dobo’s from Russia, Jews, Ukraine, and other people from Asian countries.
Comata model was basically a ship that carried 373 passengers from India to go to Canada however, immigration policies did not allow them to go in because of unfair Immigration rules which then led to the ship going back to India in the passengers, some of them were killed
Asserting aboriginal rights
John McDonald’s vision of expanded Canada became possible when the government purchased Rupert’s land from the Hudson Bay Company. His vision completely ignored. The mighty people living in the red river area, which is now mantitoba in 1876 Parliament also passed the Indian act which gave the federal government complete control over the lives of first nation people
Over the years, Indian act was changed many times, but first nations people were really consulted about those changes today. Many FN are in the process of settling land claims in the setting their rights to traditional lens, and to govern themselves this highlights, one of the many challenges when exploring Canadian national identity, our history informs our present obstacles to establish a collective conscious .
Responsible government
Dirham noticed that the people were unhappy because the government wasn’t listening to them
Responsible government is the idea that the government has to listen to its elected representatives and its people, and if the people do not like the current government, they can be removed
BNA act 1867
The act that created Canada and created two levels of government,
the federal government which was to look after national affairs
the four provincial governments would manage their own affairs this included Ontario, Quebec Nova scotia and New Brunswick.
Clifford sifton minister of interior
Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier believed that the US would try to take over the west a few people live there so he gave the job of populating the west to a guy named Clifford Sifton the minister of interior at first Seton only wanted British and American immigrants, but a few people were willing to come
Sifton then set up immigration offices in non-English speaking European countries. Soon communities of Paul’s German Ukrainians spend Norwegians and other others began to appear on the prairies English people were no longer dominant, and Franks were deeply affected as most of the immigrants chose to learn English instead of French
