Franklin dam processes that occurred

A

1980 – Hydro proposes to build a dam.
1982 (25th Jan) – Tasmania’s South West nominated for World Heritage Listing by Federal Government (Liberal).
1982 (16th June) – Tasmania parliament votes to build the dam 29:2.
1982 (November) – Federal Senate Committee recommends no dam needed.
1982 (Dec 14th) – World Heritage Listing of the South West of Tassie.
1982 (Dec) – Blockade begins to prevent construction (1300 arrests by end Feb)
1982 (Dec) – Makes it illegal to protest on Hydro’s land (even though it’s a National Park)
1983 (Feb) – Federal election announced, Labor (opposition) announce they will stop the dam if voted in.
1983 (Mar) – Labor voted in. Tasmanian government continues construction.
1983 (June) – Federal government takes Tasmanian government to court, for Violation of World Heritage Properties Conservation Act
1983 (July 1st) – High court rules construction of the dam is illegal
