Formality
Level or sophistication in language, word choice, appearance & delivery of a message
Tone
The attitude toward a subject
Formal tone
Business like, high level vocab, very structured
Informal tone
Very personal, sometimes slang vocab
Influence
The ability to affect other people’s thinking
Persuade
Make someone believe something
Argument
The main point expressed about a topic
Rhetorical fallacy
An argument that is not really sound but may still be convincing
Appeal
The means of persuasion in an argument
Logical fallacy
Depends on faulty logic
Emotional fallacy
Unfairly appeals to a persons emotions
Ethical fallacy
Unreasonable attack on the writers own authority or character
Ad hominem
A fallacy that is personal attack on a character to distract from the argument
Testimonial
A statement in support of a particular truth, fact, or claim
Exaggeration
A fallacy in which there is an overstatement of more than is true
Stereotyping
A fallacy that applies broad generalizations to a person or group which are often untrue
Appeal to authority
Agreeing to an argument simply based on another person who may not be fully qualified
Categorical claim
A fallacy in which a claim is based on faulty logic relating two things only because they are in the same category
Explicit message
Very specific or clear to understand
Implicit message
Uses graphics, body language, etc. to communicate meaning - the meaning must be inferred (implied)
