Definition of an ecosystem
All of the organisms living in one place and their physical environment. Living things in an ecosystem interact with each other.
Species
A group of organisms that can reproduce successfully.
Population
All the organisms of one species in an ecosystem.
Community
All the populations in an ecosystem.
Biosphere
All the living things on Earth.
Phyisical environment includes:
- Non-living things.
- Factors that affect living things.
Living things include:
- Fauna: animals.
- Flora: plants, algae, fungi and bacteria.
Terrestrial ecosystems
Are the ones located on land and surrounded by air.
Aquatic ecosystems
Are the ones located in water.
Types of terrestrial ecosystems:
- Forests.
- Mountain grasslands.
- Deserts and steppes.
Types of aquatic ecosystems depending on their salinity:
- Marine ecosystems or saltwater: with high salinity.
- Freshwater ecosystems: with low salinity.
Forests: definition and types
Forests are ecosystems with many trees.
- Atlantic forests.
- Mediterranean forests.
Atlantic forests:
Regions with humid climate and cool summers.
Home to bullfinches, bears and wolves.
Mediterranean forests:
Regions with dry climate and warm summers.
Home to eagles, lynxes and rabbits.
Mountain grasslands: definition, fauna and flora
terrestrial ecosystem with humid climate and cool winters. They are large areas of fertile soft soil that can be used as pastures for cattle to graze.
- Plants: herbaceous (grasses, clovers and wildflowers).
- Animals: butterflies, ladybirds, grasshoppers and deer.
