Ophthalm/o
Medical doctor who can perform eye exams and eye surgery and prescribe medications, eye glasses and contact lenses.
Conjuctiv/o
An inflammation of the conjuctiva frequently caused by a virus, bacteria, sexually transmitted infections, also called pinkeye
Rhin/o
A group of several hundred viruses that cause the common cold
Retina
Innermost layer of the eye containing rods and cones, which translate light into nerve impulses.
Cornea
Clear transplant covering of the eye; frequently referred to as the window of the eye because it allows light to enter.
Iris
Part of the middle layer of the eyeball containing the pigment (color) and a hole in the center (pupil) which controls the amount of light entering the eye.
Ciliary body
Part of the middle layer of the surface of the eyeball that holds and moves the lens.
Cataract
Clouding over the lens of the eye; prevents light from entering.
Glaucoma
Condition caused by an increase in the amount of pressure in the eye, leading to excessive amount of aqueous humor that can lead to damage of optic nerve and eventually blindness.
Myopia

Presbyopia
The loss of elasticity in the eyes lens, usually as a result of aging that causes inability to focus on objects at close range
Amblyopia
A disorder in children caused by the muscle being weaker in one eye; also called lazy eye.
Tympanic membrane
Eardrum, which separates the outer and middle ears.
Ménière’s disease
Condition of the inner ear characterized , by vertigo, tinnitus, fluctuating hearing loss, and pressure or pain in the affected ear.
