Citizen Advocacy
Movement to strengthen citizen action and motivation to participate in community and civic affairs; often focuses on bringing the marginalized back into the community
Citizenship
membership by birth or naturalization in a society that entails definable rights of participation and protection, and certain responsibilities and duties to the society
Political Participation
any number of ways a citizen can be involved in the political process (e.g. voting, running as a candidate, protesting, etc.)
Jus Soli
right of the soil: A person’s citizenship is determined by place of birth
Jus Sanguinis
right of blood: A person’s citizenship is the same as the natural parents, wherever the child is born
Naturalization
process of applying for citizenship and becoming a citizen
United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Adopted in 1948, it outlines human rights to which all people are entitled
Pacifism
Commitment to peace and opposition to war
Anti-war movements
Organized campaigns against war or specific military campaigns (e.g., the Vietnam anti-war movement during the late 1960s)
Civility
Thoughtfulness about how our actions may affect others, based on the recognition that human beings live together
Apartheid
Strict, legislated system of racial segregation & discrimination against black and other “colored” South Africans set in place by the National Party of South Africa from 1948-1994
Nelson Mandela
South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, who served as president of South Africa in 1994-1999; first Black chief executive, and elected in the first fully representative democratic election
Non-violence
Philosophy or strategy used to bring about political change
Civil disobedience
Refusal to obey a law because it is considered to be unjust; a form of non-violent political protest
