Unit 4 Flashcards
It ensures the messages are delivered to the proper device on a LAN using
hardware addresses
Data Link Layer
It provides the physical transmission of the data
Data Link Layer
Message formatted by the data link layer with a customized header including host destination and host source MAC addresses.
Data Frame
It defines how packets are placed on the media.
utilizes contention (access method) media, a “first-come/first-served” access where everyone shares the same bandwidth
MAC (Media Access Control) 802.3
Identifies and encapsulates Network Layer protocols. Tells the data link layer what to do with a packet once a frame is
received
Logical Link Control (LLC) 802.2
they read frames as they pass through a network and store MAC addresses in a filter table along with the port the frame was received on. This helps determine the location of specific devices on the network.
Bridges and Switches
Layer 2 device will forward frames only to the segment with the destination hardware address.
If the destination device is on the same segment, it blocks the frame from other segments.
If on a different segment, it transmits the frame only to that segment.
Transparent Bridging
Switch forwards frames to all connected segments if destination address not found in filter table. If an unknown device replies to this forwarding action, switch updates filter table with device’s location.
Broadcast Storm
Advantages of Switch from Hub
Each switch port (interface) has it’s own collision domain
Each device on every segment plugged into a switch can transmit
simultaneously
