Antecedent Boundaries
boundaries defined before the present-day human landscape was formed and a large population was present
(the borders often follow physical features like mountains and rivers.)
Consequent Boundaries
political boundaries established to mitigate/relieve existing cultural or economic differences
Yugoslavia breaking up by differing cultures
Subsequent Boundaries
boundary created after people have settled based on religious, ethnic, linguistic, and economic differences
Relics Boundary
a boundary that still exists on the physical landscape, but isn’t used anymore
Berlin Wall
Territoriality
attempt to control, affect, or influence people by delimiting and asserting control over a defined area.
control or ownership over a defined area to protect from external forces
ex) fences, walls, flags, symbols
Neocolonialism
powerful countries using economic or cultural powers to control or influence other countries, usually developing ones
Ethnonationalism
a state having one common that creates a sense of pride and ties the community together
when a state’s national identity is based on a common ethnicity
Imperialism
the idea of growing a state or empire through force over other nations( to gain economic and political power without establishing settlements.)
Colonialism
the practice of acquiring territories and settling there to exert political, economic, and social control over the area
