a world like a paradise where everything seems to be perfect and everyone is happy
what is dystopia?
the opposite of utopia
what are the 4 elements of dystopian fiction?
government control
propaganda and censorship
oppressive setting
individual voice
what is dictatorship?
where one individual holds all the power
what is fascism?
where the government emphasizes extreme patriotism and nationalism
what is oligarchy?
where a small group of people hole the power
what is totalitarianism?
where the government controls all aspects of its citizens’ lives
why do dystopian governments use propaganda?
to eliminate opposition and individuality
how is propaganda used by dystopian governments?
to replace individual thought with government beliefs
how is censorship used by dystopian governments?
to silence any thought or action that the government disapproves of
how is an oppressive setting used in a dystopian story?
it can be a symbol of oppression, or an antagonist of the story
the protagonist’s voice is silenced
how does individual voice define dystopian fiction?
the protagonist’s will to survive sets the plot in to motion; it is them against the world
