Unit 3B - Fieldwork - Druridge Bay physical and human fieldwork Flashcards
What is your physical fieldwork hypothesis?
How and why does % vegetation cover change with increasing distance from sea at DB
What is the human fieldwork element at DB?
Noting down any evidence of human impact on dunes, e.g. counting litter and paths
Describe location of DB?
In county of Northumberland in north east England. It is a 6 mile stretch of sand dunes and part of DB County Park
Give a risk to your safety at DB and how it was overcome?
Uneven surface causing slips and trips. Wore appropriate footwear, stuck to paths and had a first aid kit
primary data collected at DB?
% vegetation cover
What sampling methods were used to collect primary data?
Systematic and random sampling
Why was method of collecting % vc data used?
It was collected moving inland which meant that I could directly link my results to my aim
How did you ensure % vc data was collected accurately?
Same person completed same job at each site and same method used at each site
How did you present your % vc data?
A scatter graph
What did scatter graph show?
As distance from sea increases so does % vc. At site 1, % vc is 0% and by site 8 it is 100%. Vc continues at 100% from site 8 to 13.
Why did % vc increase as moved inland?
% vc increased as sea distance increased as conditions become more favourable for plant growth. As more plants grow and die as move inland across dunes then more organic matter added to soil making it more fertile and allowing more to grow which increase % vc to 100% eventually.
Wa there an anomaly in the data and why did it occur?
Vc also fell at site 6 from 76% to 40% due to a path along a fence. Fence is part of a management strategy cordoning off an area to allow vegetation re-growth and no public access
Did your results match the sand dune theory?
Yes to an extent due to an anomaly. SD theory states vc should increase as sea distance increases. This was general pattern found in my results from site 1 to 13 % vc apart from site 6 showed decrease
What other data could you have collected?
Soil pH and temperature data would give more accurate explanations for changes in % vc data that we saw as sea distance increased.
