Unit 3.1.1 Divisions of the Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Central nervous system
A
- Consists of brain and spinal cord
- Processes + coordinates responses to sensory stimuli
2
Q
Brain
A
- Complex structure
- Receives + processes sensory stimuli from the body
- Coordinates responses including voluntary movements, emotions + conscious thoughts
3
Q
Spinal cord
A
- Dense bundle of nerves
- Carries sensory info from the body to the brain
- Carries motor info from brain to body
4
Q
Spinal reflex
A
- Involuntary, unconscious
- Response to a stimulus involving the spinal cord
- Occurs without input from the brain
5
Q
Sensory receptor
A
- Sensory nerve ending
- Produces an afferent or sensory impulse when stimulated
6
Q
Sensory neuron
A
- A nerve cell
- Carries sensory signals throughout the nervous system
7
Q
Interneuron
A
- A nerve cell in the spinal cord
- Connects motor + sensory neurons by relaying info between the two
8
Q
Motor neuron
A
- A nerve cell
- Transmits motor impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal + visceral muscles
9
Q
Peripheral nervous system
A
- All the nerves outside of the CNS
- That carry messages between the CNS and muscles, organs, and glands throughout the body
10
Q
Somatic nervous system
A
- Subdivision of the peripheral NS
- Carries sensory info to the CNS
- Carries motor info to the body
11
Q
Autonomic nervous system
A
- Subdivision of the peripheral NS
- Controls the body’s internal enviro
- In an autonomous or self-regulated manner
12
Q
Sympathetic nervous system
A
- Subdivision of the autonomic NS
- Increases our arousal, readying the body for a quick response
13
Q
Parasympathetic nervous system
A
- Subdivision of the autonomic NS
- Controls the body’s internal environment
- In an autonomous or self-regulated manner
