Aims and Objectives: The Police
- To reduce crime and maintain law and order
- Protecting life and property, preserving the peace
- Have the power to arrest and detain, search and interview
Aims and Objectives: The Crown Prosecution Services
- They decide which cases should be prosecuted, and determine charges in more serious cases
- Advise police, prepare cases, provide information and support to victims
Aims and Objectives: The Judiciary
- Make decisions about the law, its interpretation and application
- Explain legal and procedural issues to the jury
- May set precedent if the law is unclear
Aims and Objectives: HM Prison Service
- To keep those that are sentenced in prison
- Help those in prison to rehabilitate and lead better lives
Aims and Objectives: The National Probation Service
- Preparing pre sentence reports for courts, to help in their selection
- Assessing offenders in prison to prepare for release on licence
- Communicate and prioritise wellbieng of victims
Funding: The Police
- The main source if income for the police is a central government grant
- Some income raised through council tax
Funding: The Crown Prosecution Service
- Government funded body with majority of its budget approved by parliament
- 2016-17 budget being £500M
- CPS can recover criminal assets through confiscation and other means
Funding: Judiciary
- Salaries are decided following the recommendation of the Senior Salaries Review Body
- SSRB give advice to the PM, Lord Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Defence in regards to funds
Funding: Prison Service
- Most Prisons are governemnt funded, with finances being raised through taxation
- In 2015, budget was £3.4B
Funding: The National Probation Service
- NPS funded by the National Offender Management Service, through income tax
Working Practices: The Police
- All police forces have teams of officers responsible for general duties and response to emergency and non calls from the public
- Also Specialist operations that cover wie range of fnctions, such as antiterrorism, dog handlers and mounted police
Working Practices: The Crown Prosecution Service
- 13 geographical areas across england and Wales, CPS direct available 24/7 to provide police with charging advice
- Follow the codes of practices: Evidential Test and Public Interest Test
Working Practices: Judiciary
- Cherished principle is that the Judiciary are independent, Judges are responsible for decisions regarding freedoms, rights and duties, and it is important they do this without bias
- Free from political contrl and cannot be dismissed by the government
Working Practices: The Prison Service
- Running and mantaining prisons across England and Wales, sorted into 4 categories
A- high risk, maximum security (HMP Frankland)
B- High risk to others (HMP Durham)
C- Lower risk, not ot be trusted in open conditions** (HMP Dartmoor)**
D- Very low risk to others, due for release soon (HMP Kirkham)
