Unit 3 (Waves) Flashcards
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another
Medium
Any substance that a wave moves through
Mechanical Waves
Waves that transfer energy through matter
Transverse Waves
The direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular is perpendicular to the direction of the disturbance
Longitudinal Wave
The wave travels the same direction of the disturbance
Crest
Highest Point, or peak, of a wave
Trough
Lowest Point, or valley, of a wave
Amplitude
The distance between the middle of a wave and a crest
Wavelength
The distance from one wave crest to the very next wave crest
Frequency
The number of waves passing a fixed point in a certain amount of time
Visible Light
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of waves detectable by the human eye
Sound
A type of wave that is produced by a vibrating object and that travels through matter
