Unit 3 Vocabulary Flashcards
the physical material that something is made of that has unique properties
substance
when a substance breaks up, is absorbed or mixes into a liquid by disappearing
dissolve
when a liquid turns into a gas (vapor) due to an increase of heat
evaporate
when two or more substances combine to cause a change at a molecular level
chemical reaction
any change that causes a new substance to be formed that rearranges molecules, this change is usually irreversible
chemical change
Usually reversible, and occurs when the form of matter is changed, but one substance is not transformed into another.
physical change
a change in the state of matter of a substance
phase change
mass is neither created or destroyed, the mass of an object will always remain the same despite changes to an object’s properties
conservation of mass
a group of atoms bonded together, that represents the smallest part of a substance
molecule
the ability for a substance to dissolve into another substance and become a part of it
soluble
a substance that does not have the ability to dissolve in a liquid
insoluble
