Voter’s evaluation of a candidate based on past performance on a particular issue

Ruled that there is no limit placed on amount of money candidates can spend from their families’ resources for a campaign

A case that paved the way for increased influence of individual donors in campaigns/elections
Deep background
unsourced information; a reporter cannot give any hint about the origin
Background
Information provided to a journalist that cannot be attributed to a named source
Off the record
Information provided to a journalist that will not be released to the public (nothing said can be printed)
On the record
Information provided to a journalist that can be released and attributed by name to the source (every word spoken can be printed)

Inoculation Ad
advertising that attempts to counteract an anticipated attack from the opposition before the attack is launched

ad that compares the records and proposals of the candidates
Political Consultant
A hired person who devises a strategy for a political campaign. They are more loyal to the party than any candidate.
Winner-take-all election
An election in which a candidate that wins the state’s vote recieves all of the delgates
Proportional election
An election in which a candidate receives the proportion of delegates equal to the proportion of the vote they received in that state
Recall
Procedure for allowing the people to vote to dismiss an elected official from office before their term has expired
Referendum
where legislative body refers proposals to the people for approval or disapproval
Initiative
Procedure by which citizens can propose a law to be placed on a ballot
Runoff primary
A second primary election held when no candidate wins a majority of the votes in the first primary
Open primary
any registered voter can vote
Closed primary
A primary in which only a party’s registered voters are eligible to cast a ballot
Primary elections
An election in which voters decide which candidates within a party will represent the party in the general election
