Unit 3 Vocab Flashcards
total stock
All parts of the natural environment. Energy, living organisms, and non-living materials.
(Everything that the force surrounds–all living things–and anything part of nature that’s not living.)
sustained yield management
Making sure that the amount of renewable resources that are used do not make it so we start running out of it. The amount that is taken out is equal to or less than the amount that comes back each year
(When living on Tatooine, you gotta make sure you don’t drink all of the water supply before the end of the year. Make sure to drink equal to or less than the amount of water you’ll gather after moisture farming).
aquaculture
Fish farming :)
There’s always a bigger fish, and an even bigger fish market
inshore vs. offshore
Inshore Fishing–commercial fishing carried out close to shore in small, independent owned boats. (Commercial, personal, tiny, boats close to shore)
Offshore Fishing–Commercial fishing carried out farther from shore in larger company-owned boats. (Commercial, company owned, big, boats far from shore).
(See Naboo’s vast shores in your own personal water speeder for some fishing, or rent a larger Gungan sub for a real experience).
selective cutting
Cutting trees that are older, imperfect, or that are in the way of the growth of other trees in the forrest.
(Kylo Wren did this for himself. Killed the old imperfect Snoke to give himself some room and light to grow).
clearcutting
Cutting all the trees
You know. At the beginning of the force awakens. With that village on Jakku. Yeah…
shelterwood logging
Cutting the big trees and leaving the small (baby) trees
(since we’re going to Enador, lets take the AT Its and not the imperial walkers. You remember what happened last time…)
extensive farming
Uses small inputs of labor, fertilizers, and money
The normal way to farm without stuffing the plants and animals with chemicals
intensive farming
Using large amounts of fertilizer, pesticides, and labor to increase per acre yield of the crop being grown
(Giving animals and plants weird chemicals and stuff to make them reproduce faster and fatter)
aridity index
A value used to show water availability. It combines measures of supply and natural demand.
(Tatooine: Low water supply, high demand.
Naboo: Greater water supply, low demand. Believe me, no one wants to drink Gungan water).
R/P ratio
The # of years that the reserves of a non-renewable resource will last at current rates of production
(The # of years Planet Ilum will be able to be used as a source of cyber saver crystals, considering the population of Jedi.)
Oil sands/tar sands
deposits of sand containing hard deposits of crude oil called bitumen
(After Jabba’s ship crashed, the oil spilled all over the sand and oil/tar sands were born!)
Fracking
a variety of techniques used to break up shale layers far below the surface in order to liberate natural gas and/or oil that has been trapped. Injecting a mixture of water, sand, and dozens of chemicals into a well usually breaks up the rock.
(What the Death Star was originally used for. They were trying to break up the rock to release the gases, then…BOOM! They broke up the planet instead. Sold that to the imperials and started using chemicals instead.)
Outsourcing
When a company moves part of its operation (eg. manufacturing or IT support) to another country to take advantage of cheaper labour costs that less stringent labour and environment controls.
(The imperials relocate and plant a base on another planet, take the people as slaves to work. Hey, there are cheaper labor costs and lower environmental controls. You can just blow it up when you’re done).
Primary Industry
An industry that focuses on a producing or extracting natural resources. This sector includes forest industries, agriculture, mining, and fishing.
(Mining for metal, cyber saver crystals, and make some oak for a fancy wooden handle).
