Q

sustained yield management

A

Making sure that the amount of renewable resources that are used do not make it so we start running out of it. The amount that is taken out is equal to or less than the amount that comes back each year
(When living on Tatooine, you gotta make sure you don’t drink all of the water supply before the end of the year. Make sure to drink equal to or less than the amount of water you’ll gather after moisture farming).

Q

inshore vs. offshore

A

Inshore Fishing–commercial fishing carried out close to shore in small, independent owned boats. (Commercial, personal, tiny, boats close to shore)
Offshore Fishing–Commercial fishing carried out farther from shore in larger company-owned boats. (Commercial, company owned, big, boats far from shore).

(See Naboo’s vast shores in your own personal water speeder for some fishing, or rent a larger Gungan sub for a real experience).

Q

aridity index

A

A value used to show water availability. It combines measures of supply and natural demand.
(Tatooine: Low water supply, high demand.
Naboo: Greater water supply, low demand. Believe me, no one wants to drink Gungan water).

R/P ratio

A

The # of years that the reserves of a non-renewable resource will last at current rates of production
(The # of years Planet Ilum will be able to be used as a source of cyber saver crystals, considering the population of Jedi.)

Q

Fracking

A

a variety of techniques used to break up shale layers far below the surface in order to liberate natural gas and/or oil that has been trapped. Injecting a mixture of water, sand, and dozens of chemicals into a well usually breaks up the rock.
(What the Death Star was originally used for. They were trying to break up the rock to release the gases, then…BOOM! They broke up the planet instead. Sold that to the imperials and started using chemicals instead.)

Q

Outsourcing

A

When a company moves part of its operation (eg. manufacturing or IT support) to another country to take advantage of cheaper labour costs that less stringent labour and environment controls.
(The imperials relocate and plant a base on another planet, take the people as slaves to work. Hey, there are cheaper labor costs and lower environmental controls. You can just blow it up when you’re done).

Q

Secondary Industry

A

An industry that focuses on making things using the products of primary industries. this sector includes manufacturing, construction, and utilities (the provision and distribution of electricity, water, natural gas, etc).
(Building lightsabers and distributing them. Not much to it other than that…)

17
Q

Tertiary Industry

A

an industry that focuses on providing services. This sector includes “everything else” that is not included in the primary and secondary industries.
(The master that trains you and teaches you how to use the lightsaber).

18
Q

Free Trade

A

International trade without tariffs or other barriers to trade.
(Like ordering a fresh shipment of grapes from Alderaan without being charged extra for buying something from another planet. The only barriers with trading would be that it blew up…)

19
Q

Tariff

A

A tax applied to imported goods that is designed to protect domestic manufacturers by making foreign goods more expensive.
(Its like having the empire come over and say that you can only purchase from Tosche Station. If you purchase anything from the Jawas you have to pay extra to the empire.)

20
Q

Basic Job

Non-basic Job

A

Basic Job–a job that brings money into an economy from somewhere else. (Paying a smuggler from Naboo who then take your money home to spend at the local grocery store).
Non-basic–a job that circulates money within an economy. (Heading to the local Mos Eisley Cantina for a bite and the musicians take your money and buy a restraining bolt from your stand)

21
Q

Multiplier Effect

A

the increase in total wealth or income that occurs when new money is injected into an economy
(after a big imperial spender comes and stays in Benstine, Tatooine and increases the market price for way more than the price of Solo’s head).
