Civil Rights
Equal Protection Clause
Guarantees the right of protection from discrimination based on race, national origin, religion, and sex
*14th Amendment
Due Process Clause
Guarantees the gov’t must follow certain procedures (due process of law) before they may deprive a person of a protected life, liberty, or property
- 5th Amendment: applies to national gov’t
- 14th Amendment: applies to state gov’t
Selective Incorporation
Extends protections of the Bill of Rights to the states

Exclusionary Rule
Evidence illegally seized by law enforcement officers in violation of the suspect’s 14th Amendment rights cannot be used against that suspect in criminal prosecution
Miranda Rule
