Unit 3 Vocab Flashcards
All organisms are made up of cells, all existing cells come from pre-existing cells and cells are the most basic unit of life.
Cell Theory
A jelly like substance that once that contains dissolved MOLECULAR building blocks, such as PROTEINS, NUCLEIC ACIDS minerals and IONS.
Cytoplasm
Structures specialized to perform distinct processes within the cell.
Organelles
Do not have a nucleus or other MEMBRANE BOUND organelles. Microscopic single celled organisms. DNA is in the CYTOPLASM.
Prokaryotic Cells
Has a nucleus or other MEMBRANE BOUND ORGANELLES. May be multi-cellular or single-celled organisms.
Eukaryotic Cells
A network of PROTEINS that is constantly changing to meet the needs of the cell. Found in EUKARYOTIC CELLS. Supports and shapes the cell, includes microtubules and microfilamets.
Cytoskeleton
The storehouse for most of most genetic info, or DNA in your cells.
Nucleus
Taking up a large space in Eukaryotic cells to produce lipids and proteins.
Endoplasmic rectilium
Tiny organelles that link amino acids together to form proteins, found in the CYTOPLASM and ER
Ribsomes
Modifies, packages and transports proteins, consists of closely stacked layers of membrane enclosed spaces.
Golgi apprentis
Isolates and transports specific proteins, small membrane bound sacs that divide some materials from the rest of the cell.
Vescicle
Supplies energy for the cell by converting light energy into usable chemical energy (photosynthesis). Bean shaped with 2 membranes.
Mitochondria
Fluid filled sacs used for the storage of materials needed for the cell. These materials may include, water, food molecules, inorganic enzymes and enzymes.
Valcuole
Membrane bound organelle that contains enzymes and defends cells from bacteria and viruses, breaks down worn out cell parts.
Lysosomes
Divides DNA during cell divisions, only animal cells
Centrioles
