Unit 3 Topic 1 Flashcards
Recall the Linnaean System
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
Define Species
A group of organisms that can potentially interbreed, or mate, with one another to produce viable, fertile offspring.
Identify features of r-Strategists.
Many offspring. Low investment. Most die before maturity. Short life span. Low individuality.
Identify features of K-Strategists.
Few offspring. High investment. Most mature. Long life. High individuality.
Define Phylogeny
Comparing genetic sequences and molecular structures.
Identify the classifications by species interactions
Predation. Competition. Symbiosis. Disease.
Define a Clade
A group of organisms that includes an ancestor and all the proposed descendants of that ancestor.
Define an Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Define Stratified Sampling
Breaks a large population down into similar subgroups and collects random samples as a representation of the population.
Identify the purpose of Stratified Sampling
Used to make estimates about the population. Including: Population density. Distribution. Environmental gradients/profiles. Zonation. Stratification.
Define Biodiversity
Biological diversity which is the variety of organisms living within an ecosystem.
Identify types of Biodiversity.
Genetic. Species. Ecosystem.
Define Species Richness
A simple measure of the number of species within a particular area.
Define Species Abundance.
The number of individuals of a particular species in the ecosystem under consideration.
Define Species Evenness
A measure of the number of individuals of a species in relation to the total number of individuals of all species in the area.
