Supreme power or authority, self governing
Sovereignty
A system of political organization in which most or all of the governing power resides in a centralized government
Unitary State

Why is the United States a Federal State?
The Constitution gave power to both the Federal Government and the state governments.
How are unitary states different from federal states?
A unitary state is a state where laws are administered uniformly by one central government. A federal state is a state where there are regional authorities and compete for power and dilute the authority of the central government
