Unit 3: Solar System Flashcards
Define Moon:
A celestial body that orbits a planet
Define Planet:
A celestial body that orbits around the sun, has a nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit
Define Dwarf Planet:
A celestial body that orbits the Sun, has enough mass to be nearly round, but has not cleared its neighborhood of other objects
Define Asteroid:
Small rocky objects that orbit around the sun
Define Sun:
A star that earth orbits and is the centre of the solar system
Define Comets:
Large objects made from dust and ice that orbit around the sun
What does Emit mean?
When an object produces and discharges light
What does Reflect mean?
When light bounces off an object
What is the difference between a reflecting and refracting telescope?
They use different materials to make the telescope
Which type of telescope uses a lens?
Refracting Telescopes
Which type of telescope uses a mirror?
Reflecting Telescopes
Which type of telescope does the Hubble Space Telescope belong to?
Reflecting Telescopes
Which type of telescope does the Hans Lippershey Telescope belong to?
Refracting Telescopes
Which type of telescope does the James Webb Space Telescope belong to?
Reflecting Telescopes
Which type of telescope uses lenses and mirrors?
Compound Telescopes
Which type of telescope does the Palomar Observatory belong to?
Compound Telescopes
Explain how a Refracting Telescope works and how it is useful?
Refracting Telescopes use a lens to bend light which allows astronomers to be able to see celestial objects from further away by focusing more light.
Explain how a Reflecting Telescope works and how it is useful?
Reflecting Telescopes use a mirror to reflect light onto another smaller mirror which allows astronomers to see celestial objects from further away.
What does the ISS stand for?
International Space Station
What are Rovers and what do they do?
Rovers are a type of robotic technology, equipped with multiple cameras and scientific instruments to analyze different things.
Explain the Canadarm2 and what is does?
Canadarm2 was designed by the Canadian Space Agency and is connected to the ISS. Canadarm2 has robotic arms to carry heavy objects and fix stuff on the ship.
What was so special about the Geocentric Model of the Solar System?
The Geocentric Model was one of the first historical models of the Solar System.
What was so special about the Heliocentric Model of the Solar System?
The Heliocentric Model put the Sun in the middle of the Solar System with all the other planets orbiting around it.
How many planets are in our Solar System and name each of them.
There is 8 planets in our Solar System (My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles) which stands for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
Examples of things in the Solar System that Emit:
The Sun, Stars, Galaxies
Examples of things in the Solar System that Reflect
Planets, Moon, Asteroids, Comets, Dust, Gas
