Unit 3 - Section 1 Flashcards
What is the molecular formula?
Gives the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
What is the structural formula?
Shows the atoms carbon by carbon with the attached hydrogen and functional group
What is the displayed formula?
Shows the atom arrangement and the bonds between them
What is the empirical formula?
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a molecule
What is the skeletal formula?
Shows the bonds of the carbon, it doesn’t show the hydrogen, however it does show the halogens attached to the carbons and the double bonds between them
What are alkanes and what does there name end in?
Hydrocarbons where every carbon has four bonds with a different atoms and the names end in -and
What are cycloalkanes?
Alkanes where all the carbons only have two hydrogen’s attached to them, the carbons also form a ring
What are alcohols and what does there name end in?
They are alkanes where one or more hydrogens are replaced with a -OH. The names end in -ol
What are aldehydes and what do they end in?
They are straight chains with branching structure and they end in CHO
What are ketones?
Oxidised aldyhides so there is a chained double bonded O
