Unit 3 redox reactions Flashcards
reduction
gaining electrons
oxidation
losing electrons
redox reactions
Electrons are transferred from one atom to another
metals are
oxidized
non-metals are
Reduced
in a neutral compound the sum of the oxidation number is
zero
in polyatomic ions the sum of the oxidation number is
the charge of the polyatomic ion
when an element gains electrons the charge goes
down
when an element loses electrons the charge goes
up
rules for Redox Reactions
1) the oxidation number of an uncombined atom is zero (diatomic ions)
2) the oxidation number of a combined atom in an Ionic Compound is equal to the charge of the ion
3) the oxidation number for the hydrogens is +1
4) the oxidation number for oxygen is always -2 (unless its in peroxcides, then its -1)
in molecules there are no
charges
what does “OIL” in “OIL RIG” mean
Oxidation Is Losing (elecrtons)
charge goes up
“RIG” in “OIL RIG” means
Reduction Is Gaining (electrons)
charge goes down
in Redox Reactions the charges
balance in the same way as they do for any other reaction
