UNIT 3. PARTS OF THE BRAIN Flashcards
State the interconnected layers in the brain.
The brain is composed of 3 interconnected layers , the central core, the limbic system and the cerebral cortex.
What does the central core contain?
The medulla and the cerebellum.
What is the medulla?
The medulla regulates life processes such as the breathing rate and heart rate.
What is the cerebellum?
The cerebellum is responsible for controlling balance, posture and movement.
What is the limbic system responsible for?
The limbic system is responsible for processing information for memories, regulating emotional states and regulation biological motivation (hunger thirst sex drive etc).
What is the cerebral cortex?
The cerebral cortex is the outer part of the cerebrum and is the centre of conscious thought and memories.
What is the key functions of the cerebral cortex?
The key functions of the cerebral cortex is that it receives sensory information, co-ordinates voluntary movement and makes decisions based on experience.
What are the three main areas within the cerebral cortex that deals with particular functions?
Sensory areas, association areas and motor areas.
Describe each area within the cerebral cortex which deals with particular functions.
Sensory area - receives information as sensory impulses from receptors (sense organs)
Association area - analyses impulses received from sensory areas and deals with thought processes ( personality, imagination and intelligence)
Motor area - acts on information from association area by sending motor impulses to effectors.
