Unit 3: Newton's Laws and Dynamics Vocabulary Flashcards
Force Definition
a push or pull on an object
Friction Definition
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another; a contact force that resists the sliding or rolling of one solid object over another surface
Free-Body Diagram Definition
the diagram in which the magnitude and direction of each force exerted on an object are represented
Net Force Definition
the sum of the forces acting on an object (total force)
Equilibrium Definition
state in which the outside forces acting on an object are all balanced, for a net outside force of zero; position at rest
Inertia Definition
a property of matter that keeps it in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force that keeps an object at rest in one position until another force acts upon it
Mass Definition
a measure of the amount of material in an object
Newton Definition
the International System of Units (SI) unit for force
Newton’s First Law Definition
if a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force. Also known as the law of inertia
Power Definition
force times the velocity
Weight Definition
the force of gravity acting on the mass of an object
Applied Force Definition
force that acts on an object
Displacement Definition
the measurement of an object’s change in position; takes into account both direction and distance from the original position
Elastic Definition
ability to exert force to restore themselves to their original length after being deformed
Linear Definition
a proportionate relationship; a graph of this relationship would depict a straight, unchanging line
