Unit 3 - Musculoskeletal Hazards And Controls Flashcards
Identify 4 wrulds?
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Bursitis
Tennis elbow
Tenosynovitis
What factors can lead to a wruld?
Repetivite movements Awkward movements Force and grip Frequency and duriation of tasks Low temperatures Vibration Pre existing medical conditions
Name 3 controls for wrulds?
Risk assessment
Adjustable equipment
Training and supervision
Regular breaks
Automation
Name 5 conditions that may arise from a poorly designed work station?
Wrulds
Musculoskeletal disorders
Postural problems
Cramp Fatigue Stress Eye problems Headaches
In relation to dse who is classed as a user?
Workers who use dse for at least 1 hour continuously on a more or less daily basis
What would be assessed under dse ?
Screen - text size, top of screen at eye level, adjustable contrast and brightness
Keyboard - separate from screen, able to be tilted, characters readable
Mouse - support for wrist or forearm, close to user (to avoid over reaching), adjust speed and accuracy.
Furniture - size of work surface, stable chair, feet flat on floor
Environment- suitable lighting, comfortable temperature, adequate ventilation
When should dse assessments be reviewed
Major changes made to equipment, work environment
New user at work station
Workstations relocated
Task changes considerably
Give 3 things that can help prevent negative health affects arising from dse
Vary the task
Look away from the screen occasionally
Take breaks to prevent fatigue
what shoukd be covered in dse training?
Risks Good posture How to adjust furniture Organise the workplace to avoid awkward or repetitive movements Reducing screen glare Adjusting the screen Who to ask for dse help
Define manual handling?
The transporting or supporting of a load by hand or bodily force.
Any lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling
What are the necessary requirements of a manual handling risk assessment?
Task
Individual
Load
Environment
How do we minimise risk in relation to manual handling?
Mechanical assistance
Reduce weight of load - split it
Reduce carrying distance Handles and shoulder straps Store goods at waist height Improve environment - non slip surface, lighting, heating Display the weight of loads Traning and supervision
What is the rule of 2 person lifting
2 people can not lift twice as much as one person
What should manual handling training cover?
Tile Common injuries Safe lifting techniques Appropriate systems of work Use of mechanical aids Practical demonstrations and assessments
What is the safe lifting technique?
Plan the route Correct position of feet Assess the load Grip Natural back Bend knees Head up Lift smoothly Replace safely
