Unit 3 Muscular System; directional terms Flashcards
abduction
movement of a body part away from the midline of the body.
adduction
movement of a body part toward the midline of the body.
inversion
the turning inward of the sole of the foot ( sole faces midline )
eversion
the turning outward of the sole of the foot ( sole faces away from midline )
elevation
raising of a body part
flexion
the movement of two body surfaces toward each other, as in the act of bending
extension
the straightening of a limb after it has been flexed
hyperextension
the act of bending a joint or limb beyond normal extension ROM (range of motion)
dorsiflexion
movement of the sole of the foot upward (heel down)
plantar flexion
motion of the plantar surface (sole of foot) away from the midline of the body (Tip Toe)
rotation
movement of a body part around its longitudal axis that is length wise
medial rotation (internal)
movement/rotation medially; toward the midline
lateral rotation (external)
movement laterally; away from the midline
pronation
rotational motion of the forearm in which palm moves face down
supination
rotational motion of the forearm in which palm moves face up
