Unit 3 - Lesson 5: Refraction Flashcards
What must waves be in to travel at different speed?
Waves travel at different speeds in substances with different densities.
Do transverse waves, like EM radiation, move slower or faster in denser material?
Transverse waves, like EM radiation, move slower in denser material.
Do longitudinal waves, like sound, move slower or faster in denser material?
Longitudinal waves, like sound, move faster in denser material.
What are the requirements for a wave to be refracted?
A wave is only refracted if it changes direction at the boundary to the material it enters.

What type of waves can ray diagrams be drawn for?
Reflected and refracted waves.
What is the method for drawing a refracted ray diagram?
- Draw the boundary line between your two materials.
- Add a normal.
- Draw an incident ray that meets the normal at the boundary line.
- Measure the angle of incidence.
- Draw the refracted ray. If the material gets denser, bend it towards the normal. If the material gets less dense, bend it away from the normal.
- Draw the angle of refraction.

What can rays be refracted twice through?
Rectangular glass blocks.
What three rays are shown when a ray is refracted twice through a rectangular glass block?
Incident ray
Refracted ray
Emergent ray
