A doctrine of non-violence towards all human beings.
Ahimsa
The process of self- deprivation: denying oneself of food, cleansing and pleasure to achieve a higher spiritual goal.
Asceticism ( practiced by monks)
The “ sky- clad” sect in Jainism, which practices ascetic nudity.
Digambaras (sky- clad)
A conqueror: one who defeats his or her desires and achieves enlightenment.
Jina
The soul. Jan’s believe that both animate (ex: human) and inanimate (ex: rock) beings have a soul.
Jiva
The law of cause and effect- for every action there is a consequence.
Karma
The process of eliminating self-centred thinking and becoming united with the spirit that governs the universe.
Mediation
The salvation from the cycle of rebirth.
Moksha
The rebirth of a soul over many lives until it achieves release.
Reincarnation
A holy ritual of gradual fasting to the point of death.
Sallekhana
Monks wear white clothing
Svetambaras ( white- clad)
A four month period of solemnity which is the holiest time of year for monks. During this time travel is restricted to avoid the accidental deaths of insects and animals.
