What are hazards?
Anything with the potentilla to cause harm
(e.g. soiled bedding)
What are risks?
The chance of harm occurring
(e.g. getting an infection from the bedding)
Types of Hazards:
Health Hazards - an incident or event leading to an illness
Safety Hazards - Incidents leading to personal injury or damage to equipment or premises
Security Hazards - Intruders, theft of property or info, kidnapping of individuals leaving without consent or supervision
Care Setting Hazards:
Environment - wet floors, uneven surfaces
Biological - bodily fluids, waste
Chemical - unlabelled cleaning fluid, hot oil
Psychological - stress, tiredness
Musculoskeletal - manual handling
Working conditions - poor lighting, cold
Working Practices - long hours, lack of training
Lack of security - faulty smoke alarms, broken locks
Impacts Of hazards
1) Injury or harm

Example of injury or harm:
Environmental or chemical hazard
If a spillage in a nursery is not cleaned up correctly, with the correct warning signs, a child could slip and hurt themselves. Also a nursery nurse may not notice the wet floor if there are no signs and they may slip and hurt their back. This could result in them having to take time off work
Example of Illness:
Biological hazards, Chemical hazards and
Psychological hazards.
For example, if bodily fluids are not cleaned up correctly with the correct cleaning materials. Failure to do this could result in the spread of infections.
Example of poor standards of care :
Working condition hazards and working practices
For example, If a nursery does not
have their water pipes inspected regularly, this could lead to a build up of bacteria which can lead to serious diseases.

Types of Abuse:
Physical - hitting, biting
Sexual - unwanted contact
Emotional + Psychological - verbal abuse
Financial Exploitation - withholding or taking money
Neglect - not meeting needs
Why does harm and abuse occur ?
- Can occur unintentionally
- Result of poor care
- Care practitioners not following control procedures ( infecting service users)
- Rough handling
- Intentional , intending to inflict pain on another person
- Can also happen to care practitioners
Effects Of Abuse:
Short Term:
- bruises, cuts, broken bones

- mental health issues (depression, self harm)
- inability to sleep, angry , upset
- anorexia/ obesity , high stress levels
- inability to form relationships and trust others
- addiction to drugs/ alcohol
