what is a charter?
written permission from the king to do things like start a colony
what was the “lost colony” and why was it unsuccessful?
roanoke.
it was unsuccessful because it was abandoned. they had no food, no shelter, an unfamiliar climate, etc. possibly fought with native americans. left letters “croatan” written on a tree
what is the magna carta?
english document that established the rule of law. limited rights of kings and queens.
ex: they couldn’t tax the colony without the consent of the people
what is the english bill of rights?
english document that established rights of englishmen. government in the colonies was influenced by government in great britain
who was john smith?
what policy did he institute to make jamestown more successful?
john smith was the leader of the jamestown colony.
his policy was “no work, no food”
what challenges did the settlers face?
harsh winter, drought, diseases. wars with natives, no food, no shelter, etc.
what factors helped jamestown to become the first permanent english settlement in the new world?
with help from native americans, they grew tobacco for a profit
what is a cash crop?
a crop that is grown to be sold for a profit
what type of government and cornerstone of american government did the house of burgesses establish?
a type of democracy called a republic. people had the right to vote. first law they passed had to do with tobacco prices. it was the beginning of self-government in the colonies
what was another name for the pilgrims?
separatists
why did the pilgrims leave england?
they wanted to separate from the church of england. they wanted religious freedom
what was the name of the ship that the pilgrims sailed on?
the mayflower
what was the journey to the new world on the pilgrim’s ship like?
rough seas, taken off course, limited food and drink. did not land where they had planned to
what was the social contract the pilgrims signed?
the mayflower compact
why was there a need to write the mayflower compact?
to benefit the majority of the people
