Unit 3: EMSPEC Flashcards
Wave
The transfer of energy from place to place.
Wavelength
The distance between two high points.
Frequency
The # of waves that pass by a point in a given amount of time.
Electromagnetic Radiation
Light that is given off when electrons move from a high energy level to a low energy level in an atom.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The entire range of wavelength/energy of electromagnetic waves.
Ionizing Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation w/ enough energy to ionize (remove electron) an atom. Changes its chemical properties.
Non-ionizing Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation (light) that does not have enough energy to ionize (remove electron).
Emission Spectrum
Color of light given off by an atom of an element. Depends upon the arrangement of electrons in that atom.
Absorption Spectrum
Colors of light that are absorbed by an atom of an element. Depends upon the arrangement of the electrons in that atom.
Red Shift (away)
When the light from an object shifts toward the red end of the spectrum due to its movement AWAY from the observer.
Blue Shift (toward us)
When the light from an object shifts toward the blue end of the spectrum due to its movement toward the observer.
