Unit 3 Definitions Flashcards
What is the temperature the measure of?
average kinetic energy in a substance
Define Specific Latent Heat
The amount of thermal energy required for 1 Kg of a substance to change from one state to another
What is thermal conduction?
The transfer of thermal energy from a warmer substance to a colder one
Define Nuclear Fusion
When energy is gained by combining two small nucleons to form a larger one
Radiation is the transfer of?
Heat energy
Define Latent heat
The amount of energy released or absorbed by a substance during phase transition
A shopping cart rolls down a ramp (with friction). What energy is constant?
The mechanical energy and the thermal energy (generated from friction) is constant.
What is the Work-Energy Theorem ?
The net work of an object equals its change in kinetic energy.
When calculating work, when the angle is 180, what does that mean.
The force exerted on an object and the displacement are in opposite directions
Why does the temperature of an object remain the same when the object is still gaining thermal energy and going through phase transition.
Because the thermal energy is being converted to only gravitational potential energy and not kinetic energy.
What does power represent
The rate at which energy is transformed
The thermal energy of an object?
The mechanical energy of its particles. (Gravitational Potential Energy and Kinetic energy)
What is a convection current?
When thermal energy heats up a pot of water. The colder water at the top is denser than the warm. So it goes down, and the warm water goes up.
Define Specific Heat Capacity
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 Kg of the substance by 1 degree Celsius.
What is also a formula to calculate Power
Power = Force x Velocity
