Unit 3 Cardiovascular disease Flashcards
What is the #1 killer in the US?
Cardiovascular Disease
What is a Chronic disease?
a disease that lasts for a long time or can persist throughout your life
Functions of cardiovascular system include
Delivering materials
Removing wastes
Fighting diseases
How many chambers of the heart are there and what are they?
Four Chambers
Two upper chambers - atria (receives blood)
Left and right atriums
Two lower chambers - ventricles (distributes blood)
Left and right ventricles
Risk factors of cardiovascular disease include..
Age Smoking Ethnicity Exercise Healthy diet Gender Healthy weight Manage stress Heredity Drinking (HAGSEEDHMH)
Name the kinds of chronic diseases
Hypertension Atherosclerosis Heart attack Arrhythmia Congestive heart failure Stroke (SCHAHA)
Hypertension
- high blood pressure of 140/90
- high blood pressure over time can lead to heart disease
- Controlled with medications
Sphygmomanometer
Instrument used to measure blood pressure
Atherosclerosis
- Fat buildup (plaque) forms in the arteries
- The artery walls harden
- Can lead to coronary heart disease
Angina pectoris
Chest pains that occur when an area of the heart does not get enough oxygen-rich blood
Heart attack
- Clot blocks blood to the heart
- No blood supply to the tissues in the heart
- Tissue dies
- The more tissue that dies the more severe heart attack
Risk factors of heart attack
hypertension
high cholesterol
no exercise
smoking
Arrhythmia
- Irregular heartbeats
- It could be a side effect of a heart attack/develop spontaneously
- Medications / artificial pacemaker
Fibrillation
Life threatening arrhythmia
Congestive heart failure
-A weakness in the heart that leads to a buildup of fluid in the lungs and surrounding body tissues
Stroke
- Blockage of blood flow to the brain
- Paralyzed on one side of the body (one side of face sags, can lift right arm and can’t lift left arm)
- Brain damage
- Paralysis on one side of the body
Brain damage results in
Problems with senses, speech, comprehension, behavior, thought patterns, and memory
