Unit 3- Atoms and elements Flashcards
What is a carbon footprint?
It’s the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere from everything you do and consume
Give examples of Naturally occurring substances
Water, grass, wood, carbon dioxide, metals (and many more)
Give examples of man made substances
Brick, glass, cement, plastic, paper (and many more)
How did an element get its name?
It comes from latin meaning simple
Describe an atom
An atom is the smallest particle of an element
What does the greek word atomic mean
Uncut
List 3 fossil fuels
Coal, oil and gas
What is carbon dioxide doing to our atmosphere?
It’s trapping heat, it forms a layer around the earth
List 3 things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint
Walk to school, turn off electricity when not in use, recycle, burn less fossil fuels, take the bus (and many more)
List properties and uses of diamond
Diamond is a very hard material, each carbon Atom is surrounded by 4 other carbon atoms. Diamond is used in cutting tools involved in mining
List properties and uses of graphite
Graphite consists of layers of carbon atoms held together by weak forces of attraction. Each carbon atom is surrounded by 3 other carbon atoms. Graphite is used as a lubricant and in pencils
What is gasses is air made up of? And list the %’s
Nitrogen: 78%
Oxygen: 21%
Carbon dioxide and other gasses: 1%
How are the gasses that make up air separated?
These gasses are obtained from each other by cooling the air down and then slowly warming it up. This is called fractional distillation
How does the experiment of producing oxygen gas in the lab work?
Hydrogen peroxide decomposes and produces oxygen and water a catalyst called manganese dioxide is used to speed up the decomposition
What happens when a glowing splint is placed in a test tube filled with oxygen?
The splint relights
