Fine Motor Skills
The recruitment of small muscle groups
E.g Darts, golf (putting) & pool
Gross Motor Skills
The recruitment of large muscle groups
E.g Football (kicking), running and cricket (hitting ball)
Discrete
Movement that has a distinct beginning and end
E.g Netball pass, kicking a ball and throwing
Serial
Several discrete skills performed in a sequence; put together
E.g Trampolining and tumbling
Continuous
Movement that has no clear beginning or end point
E.g Running, cycling and swimming
Open Practice
Where the environment is more unpredictable and external factors. Is externally paced
E.g Tackling in football
Closed Practice
More predictable and person has a large amount of control over the environment. Is internally paced.
E.g Throwing a dart, playing pool and serving in tennis
Cognitive Stage
Is the beginning stage of learning
Characteristics - Many mistakes that you cant’t fix yourself and large errors
Associative Stage
The intermediate stage of learning (practicing)
Characteristics - Minor errors, refirming skills, practice in game-like settings
Autonomous Stage
Elite level
Characteristics - Very skillful, can recognise and fix errors, minimise energy expenditure, maximise chance of success
Whole Practice
Doing the entire part of a skill during practice
E.g Tennis serve
Part Practice
Breaking up the skill into smaller segments during practice
E.g Tennis serve - just throwing
Distributed Practice
Shorter but more sessions and more rest time (breaks in between)
Massed Practice
Longer but less sessions and less rest time
Blocked Practice
Repeating a skill over and over before moving to the next (continuously)
