In the past what were ships made of?
They were made of wood
What does felled mean?
It means that a tree is cut down
Where does softwood come from?
It comes from coniferous trees
Where does hardwood come from?
It comes from deciduous trees.
Why is softwood a bit better than hardwood?
Because softwood grows faster than hardwood and it is cheaper
What is good about hardwood?
It is sought after for its variety if colours and grains, it has good aesthetically and physical properties. It has a closer grain making it more dense and hard wearing
What are the properties of Ash wood?
It is very tough but also flexible and shock resistant
What are the properties of Beech wood?
Beech is tough and very durable with a fine finish
What are the properties of Oak wood?
Oak is tough, hard and durable with a variable grain
What is balsa?
Balsa is a wood which is soft and lightweight
Is balsa a softwood or hardwood?
It is a hardwood but has many softwood properties
What is special about Mahagony?
It is a type of wood sought after for its deep rich reddish colour
What are the properties of pine?
It is lightweight and easy to work with
What are the properties of larch?
It is durable, tough and has good resistance
What are the properties of spruce?
It has a high stiffness to weight ratio
What are the properties of cedar?
It contains natural oils which offer natural water resistance
Where is spruce commonly used?
It is commonly used in violins, piano and guitar families of instruments
What is oxidation?
It is when a surface reacts with oxygen
What is an alloy?
A mixture of a metal and another substance
What can metals be categorised as?
Ferrous and Non - Ferrous metals
What is common about all ferrous metals?
They all contains iron
What are the properties of ferrous metals?
Most of them are magnetic and will rust if exposed to moisture without a protective finish
What are the properties of non-ferrous metals?
This group of pure metals are generally not magnetic and does not contain iron. Non ferrous metals do no rust but they can oxidise
What are some examples of ferrous metals?
Mild steel
Carbon steel
Cast iron
What are thermoforming plastics?
They are plastics that can get more flexible as it is heated. It can shape and be reformed multiple times
What are thermosetting plastics?
They are plastics that remain rigid and once they have been formed they cannot reform
