Unit 3 Flashcards
Prior to using any industry container, the nurse must first: 1. 2. 3. 4.
- Read label and determine if the correct fluid is ordered.
- Check the expiration date
- Evaluate container for integrity
- Check fluid for clarity and particulate matter
Name the different types of infusate administration sets
Primary administration set (most common, single and Y-type)
Secondary administration set (less common and hung higher)
Volume control administration set
Blood and blood product administration set
Lipid administration sets
Name 8 parts of IV tubing
Spike, drop chamber, tubing, clamp (roller or slide), check valve, filter, injection port, adapter
What are the accessory devices
Filter, extension set, adapters/connectors, needleless systems, venous access device, vein illumination device, prep & maintenance materials (skin prep, dressings, kits)
Name 4 infusion regulation systems
Mechanical gravity control devices
Electronic control devices (controllers and pumps)
Ambulatory infusion systems
Disposable infusion devices
What way to arteries run? Veins? What is the pressure like?
Arteries Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart & have high pressure.
Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart & have a much lower pressure
Where are valves present?
Only in veins
What is the most common being used in:
The hand?
The arm?
The chest?
The hand, dorsal venous arch.
The arms, basilic, radial, cephalic, and median of the arms.
The chest, subclavian and jugular
How do you prepare for venipuncture, psychologically?
Physically?
Psychologically: be honest, reduce pain, explain procedure, be confident, and positive
Physically: safety, comfort, position, and prepare environment (have materials ready)
When selecting a vein what should you take into consideration?
- most appropriate access for intended therapy, while minimizing associated risks and complications
- clients age
- diagnoses
- health status
- duration
- purpose and side effects of therapy
What should happen if the nurse is planning to administer the IV to lower extremities?
Why is this avoided?
- obtain physicians order, facility policy
- not give to ambulatory patient
- stick the dorsal arch or saphenous vein
It’s avoided because of the risk of development of thrombophlebitis & embolism.
What factors influence the condition of veins?
Hydration status, age/size of patient, duration of therapy or drug abuse, CVD, surgery or trauma
