What are the the 3 general components of a dysphagia evaluation?
- Prefeeding Assessment
- Clinical evaluation of the swallow
- Instrumental assessment
What is included in the prefeeding assessment?
- review of medical records
- history
- Observations of oral/pharyngeal/laryngeal function
What did the clinical evaluation of the swallow used to be called?
“bedside” evaluation
What happens during the clinical evaluation of the swallow?
give the pt some kinds of consistencies to swallow and then make judgments about the 5 phases of swallowing
What are important notes in the chart to review?
- Doctor’s order
- vital signs
- Nurse’s notes
- X-ray reports
- Surgical reports
- Otolaryngology exam
- respiratory status
- Dysphagia symptoms
- lab results
- behavioral observations
- long-term plan
Why is it important to look at diet?
Determine their current dietary status- regular, pureed, thin, NPO
What does NPO mean?
nothing by mouth
Why is the patient’s temperature important?
A temperature spike may be an indication of pneumonia, possibly caused by aspiration
Why look at x-rays?
Can see whether or not there has been infiltration into the lungs
The respiratory status will tell us what?
If the patient has a trach or not and their oxygenation level, breaths per minute
What should the oxygenation level be above?
above 90
