Unit 3 Flashcards
What is DNA?
The blueprint of a living organism. This is genetic information.
What is a tumour?
A large mass of uncontrolled cells
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the splitting and replicating of chromosomes and replicating of the nucleus.
What is interphase?
Interphase is the preparation for mitosis. This is the waiting stage, all growth happens.
What are chromatids?
Chromatid is half of a chromosome. A complete chromosome has two sister chromatids.
What is prophase? When does it happen? And what stage is it for mitosis?
Prophase is the first stage of mitosis. During this stage the centrioles migrate to opposite poles, spindle fibers form from the centrioles and attach to the centimeres. The nucleus will also begin to break down spilling the chromosomes into the cytoplasm.
What is metaphase and what stage does that happen in for mitosis?
Metaphase is the second stage of mitosis. This is when the spindle fibers connect to the centromeres of the chromosomes. The chromosomes will then the lineup at the equator and the spindle fibers will attach to one half of the chromosome (sister chromatid)
What is anaphase what stage does that happen?
Anaphase is the third stage of mitosis. This is when the cell begins to elongate while the chromosomes are pulled apart into sister chromatids, they then migrate to opposite poles.
What is telophase and what stage of mitosis does it occur?
Telophase is the fourth stage of mitosis. This is when spindle fibers begin to disappear while the nucleus is rebuilding. Cleavage furrow in animal cells or cell plate forms and cytokinesis happens
What is cytokinesis?
Cytokinesis is the division of cytoplasm and organelles.
What is a Homologous pair?
Same or Matching. Has the same genetic content.
What is a centromere?
The middle part of the chromosome that holds it together.
What is the diploid count?
A diploid count as a full chromosome count. For humans full chromosome count is 46 chromosomes.
What are gametes?
Sperm or eggs.
What is a zygote?
A zygote is a fertilized egg.
