Why did Canada face a conscription crisis during WW1? (LA)

A

Canada faces a conscription crisis in 1917 due to the fact that little to no Canadians would volunteer after seeing how the conditions were and how many deaths/ casualties they’re was. This drew separation in Canada between the French speaking Canadians and the English speaking Canadians. ( English were for this)

What was the historical significance of the battle of Vimy ridge? (LA)

A

The Canadian troops, lead by Sir Julian Byng and master mind sir Arthur Currie captured Vimy ridge from the Germans April 1917. They used innonative thinking and tactics like the creeping barrage. This was the first time the 4 Canadian division fought together. This battle brings Canada a sense of pride and identity, as no other forces were able to capture Vimy.

A

At the begging of the war planes were only used to gather information on enemies to help commanders plan attacks and have locations of troops and artillery’s, but later evolved into fighter planes where aces would have dogfights in the air. This further advanced technology in aircrafts and weapons .

What was the impact of WW1 on Canada. (LA)

A

Canada showed the world that it’s able to be an independent country and not just part of the British empire, Which is shown by the battle of Vimy ridge. Over 61,000 deaths and 171,000 wounded in the aftermath of the war, but women were gained the right to vote in 1918, they’re was division between the French and English speaking Canadians due to the conscription crisis.

A

The enemies at home are the people who have emigrated form nations now considered the enemy who has not gained their Canadian citizenship yet. Harsh measures were taken against the Canadians of Hungary, Czechia, Ukraine, Germany, Poland decent.
Robert Borden did this to protect Canada from the war in Europe.
These emigrant were forced into labour jobs such as cleaning out national parks, clearing forests and roads,
Ukrainians and Germans were event sent to internment camps

What was the Halifax explosion? (LA)

A

The Halifax explosion was an explosion between 2 ships one the ship called the Mont Blanc was loaded with 2400 tonnes of explosives. After the collision of the 2 ships the Mont Blanc went up in flames and landed on shore in Halifax where it blew up and killed over 1600 people and injured over 9000. Destroying buildings and homes all over. This is one of the biggest man made explosions ever.
