Diphenhydramine
Classification: Antihistamine, 1st Gen
Side Effects: Blurred Vision, Anorexia, Dry Mouth, Drowsiness, Dizziness, Photosensitivity
Patient Teaching:
May cause drowsiness so caution patients to avoid driving or activities that require alertness.
May also cause dry mouth so frequent oral rinses and good oral hygiene and sugarless gum.
Use sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity reactions
Methotrexate
Classification: Antimetabolites, Antineoplastics, Immunosuppressants
Side Effects: Bone marrow suppression, Anemia, Leukopenia (risk for infections), Thrombocytopenia, increase risk for renal failure and liver damage
Patient Teaching: decrease chances for infection so avoid large groups, avoid those who are sick, stay up to date on vaccines, can increase chance of hepatotoxicity, Laboratory studies must be monitored to ensure that the hepatic, hematopoietic, and renal systems are functioning adequately.
Ibuprofen
Classification: Anti-Inflammatory, Analgesic, Antipyretic
Side Effects: GI upset: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Kidney (NSAIDS are nephrotoxic)
Patient Teaching: Admin of higher than recommended doses does not provide increased pain relief but can increase side effects, Use lowest does for shortest period of time to minimize risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events
Prednisone
Classification: Corticosteroids
Side Effects: Decrease immune system, Hyperglycemia, Soft bones, decrease wound healing
Patient Teaching: Avoid grape fruit juice, report signs of infection due to the immunpsuppressing, Increase calcium, slowly taper off medication
Acyclovir
Classification: Antiviral
Side Effects: Acne hives, polydipsia, Renal failure, seizures, dizziness, headache
Patient Teaching: Not a cure and will not prevent the spread of infection. No sexual contact while lesions are present,
Nystatin
Classification: Antifungal
Side Effects: Burning, itching, hypersensitivity, redness, stinging
Patient Teaching: Take medication for full course even if feeling better. Report increased skin irritation or lack of response
Permethrin
Classification: Antiparasitic
Side Effects: pruritus, rash of the scalp, erythema, burning, tingling, numbness or pain of the scalp, and edema
Patient Teaching: With the administration of permethrin, report stinging, tingling, skin numbness, rash, itching, and rash to the prescriber.
benzoyl peroxide
Classification: Topical Antibiotics for Acne
Side Effects: irritation or excessive dryness, especially when used with some prescribed topical medications.
Patient Teaching: Discontinue use of the product if severe irritation occurs. Typically, the patient applies a gel of benzoyl peroxide once daily.
Mupirocin
Antibacterial. Topical, that treats Impetigo
Selenium Sulfide
Classification: Antiseborrheic, Antifungal Seborrheic Dermatitis
Side Effects: Scalp irritation, skin irritation, oiliness or dryness of hair/scalp, hair loss, hair discoloration
Patient Teaching: Report any irritation to the skin. Shampoo twice weekly with selenium sulfide shampoo for 2 wks
Salicylic Acid
Treats Acne
Coal Tar
topical medication applied to skin to treat psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff).
Potriene
Calcipotriene 0.05% is a derivative of vitamin D2. It works by decreasing
the mitotic turnover of the psoriatic plaques. Its most common side effect is local irritation.
Tazarotene
Treats psoriasis
Isotretinoin
Classification: Antiacne, Retinoid
Side Effects: Inflammation of the lips, Photosensitivity, irritation, increase thirst, Dry and chafed skin
Patient Teaching: To avoid additive toxic effects, patients are cautioned not to take vitamin A supplements while taking retinoids
