The state of a persons physical, social, emotional, mental & spiritual health with the absence of illness and disease

A disorder of structure or function that produces specific symptoms or affects a specific location.

complex combination of all dimensions in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable & engaged
Optimal health & wellbeing
The best possible state of an individuals health & wellbeing for their age
Dynamic nature
Something that is changing/moving continually in response to its environment & experiences
Subjective nature
Something considered to be influenced by personal opinions or beliefs
Interrelationships between dimensions
Maintaining optimal health & wellbeing requires a balance & interaction between all dimensions
Health status
An Individuals or populations overall health, taking into account various aspects like life expectancy, levels of disability & disease risk factors
Burden of disease
Measures the impact of living with illness & injury and dying prematurely
DALY (disability adjusted life years)
A measure of healthy life lost during to living with a disability
Morbidity
Number of diseases throughout a population
Mortality
Number of deaths throughout a population
Life expectancy
The average period that a person may expect to live
HALE (Health adjusted life years)
Extends the concept of life expectancy by considering the time spent living with ill health from disease & injury
Self-assessed health status
A measure of the populations health based on people’s personal perceptions of their own health
Difference between emotional & mental health & wellbeing
Emotional is the ability to recognise and manage emotions. Mental relates to the mind and brain with the ability to think & process information.
