Unit 3 Flashcards
classification criteria for muscles
striations, nervous control, number of nuclei
skeletal muscle
striated, voluntary, multinucleate
smooth muscle
not striated, involuntary, uninucleate
cardiac muscle
striated (w intercalated discs), involuntary, uninucleate
excitability
ability to respond to a stimulus, can be activated
contractility
shorten and thicken in response to a stimulus
extensibility
ability to be stretched beyond original shape
elasticity
able to return to normal shape and size
functions of muscle
motion, maintenance of posture, stabilizing joints, heat production
skeletal muscle composition
skeletal muscle fibers, blood vessels, nerve fibers, connective tissue
muscle attachment
minimum of 2 for each muscle, direct or indirect
direct attachment
muscle on bone, fused with periosteum
indirect attachment
muscle attached to bone via tendon or aponeurosis
origin
attachment site to bone that does not move as muscle contracts
insertion
attachment site to bone that moves as muscle contracts
