Unit 3 Flashcards
Is the world getting richer or poorer?
Currently the world is getting richer and more developed overtime as technology has improved.
This increases the quality of life in MIC’s and LIC’s.
Increases the efficiency of pricing in the low income areas.
Define middle class
A group of individuals who are living between the upper and lower class. Generally a person earning over $4 a day.
How has the number of people considered middle class changed overtime globally?
The population of middle income countries has grown which has increased the population who are considered middle class. Factors such as in technology increases the demand for jobs, which means people are more likely to be employed and the access to education in most countries have improved.
Define biocapacity
The ecosystems capacity to produce biological materials used by people and to absorb waste material generated by humans, under current management schemes and extraction technologies. Measured in global hectares.
Define the ecological footprint
The theoretical measurement of the amount of land and water a population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its waste under prevailing technology.
Define the difference between an ecological creditor and debtor
Both calculated by the ratio of biocapacity to ecological footprint of consumption for that country.
Ecological Creditor- A country with a biocapacity that exceeds their ecological footprint of consumption.
Ecological Debtor- A country with an ecological footprint that exceeds their biocapacity.
What is a global trend for countries in ecological debt?
Most high income countries- as most people tend to be wealthier, they would have a higher quality of life and therefor use more resources.
Describe the global trends of biocapacity
The areas with a higher bio capacity includes South America, Russia and the US. This could be due to the resources they are able to provide as well as the size of the areas tend to be dependent on the biocapcity.
Define a carbon footprint
The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community. Mainly produced by the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes.
Define a global hectare
A common unit that encompasses the average productivity of all the biologically productive land and sea in the world in a given year. Biologically productive areas include forests, fishing grounds, and crop lands. These would not include deserts, glaciers and open ocean.
What’s the 3 types of water consumption?
Agricultural, domestic, industrial
