Unit 2.4 - Further Motion Concepts Flashcards
What is momentum the product of and is it scalar or vector?
Momentum = mass * velocity (it is vector as velocity is vector)
State Newton’s second law in terms of momentum.
Resultant Force = Change in momentum/time
What is the law of conservation of momentum?
As long as no external unbalanced forces are applied, momentum stays the same before and after a collision or explosion.
What is a moment/how is it calculated?
The Moment (or turning force) is equal to the force applied multiplied by the perpendicular distance of the force from the pivot (M=Fd)
How do clockwise and anticlockwise moments compare relate to the turning of an object?
If clockwise moment = anticlockwise moment, the object is balanced; if the moment in one direction is greater than the other, the object will turn.
