Evaluate the method of Appraisal Observation
Definition= Employee is watched doing their job and is then followed up with an interview
Advantage = Employees are observed in usual surroundings and work is not interrupted
Disadvantages= Employees may find it off-putting being observed and can be time consuming
Evaluate the method of Appraisal Interview
Definition= Interview is a one to one discussion between employee and a manager
Advantages= Employees can have their say and it is an opportunity to discuss performance and work issues
Disadvantages = Employee and employer need to be well prepared for the appraisal. Employees may not be open and honest
Evaluate the method of Appraisal Self Evaluation
Definition= looking critically at one’s own work
Advantages= Employee is given more responsibility which can be motivational
Disadvantages=Employee may not be the best person to assess his/her own strengths and weaknesses
If not prepared then the appraisal may not be effective
What are the three reasons for staff training
Induction=this is the training given to employees when they start a new job
Change in Procedures= so employees are familiar with new ways of doing things
For the business to become more competitive=– a well trained workforce will be more efficient and productive and better able to meet the needs of customers, meaning the business will be in a better position to beat the competition

A method of training where employees are trained in their normal place of work
Advantages of On the Job Training
The trainee does not need to take time off as the training is happening in the workplace meaning no loss of output
It is relatively cheaper method than off-the-job training
On the Job Training Disadvantages
Trainee may pick up bad habits
The trainee may make mistakes which might be costly for the organization
Define Off the Job Training
A method of training where employees are trained away from their normal place of work,
Off the Job Training Advantages
Since the training is carried out by specialists it is usually of higher quality, meaning employees should be properly trained
Employees are trained away from their place of work so any mistakes will not impact on customers
Off the job training Disadvantages
Off-the-job training is more expensive than on-the-job training, due to the costs of taking part in a training course and time off work
Causes disruption to normal work patterns as employees may need time off – leading to a loss of productivity
