Q

the what is where for north korea vs japan

A

brief overview: 150 000 north koreans who were forcebly brought to japan in 1946, are still treated as foreigners even though they have been there for generations. the theoritcal border allowed for a divide between the native japanese locals and the north koreans, this led to locals protesting against north koorean kids going to school to learn about their culture.
locations : tokyo, japan. a percieved ex clave created by a cultural border that still follows japans laws.
scale: global in relation to me living in missisauga.
place : north korea is considered their “home” because of the cultural connection they have with it through their learning in korean schools funded by the chongryon.

Q

the why there for north korea vs japan

A

political lens: north korea sent spies to japanese beaches to kidnap citizens so they can improve their langauge training for their spies. north korea withdrew from treaty that prevents countries from building more nuclear weapons, and began testing missiles that landed on japans borders. the chongryon community is used by the japanese governement as a form of protection against north korea. and for north korea theyre used as loyal spies and as a way of establishing control in japan.

social: koreans felt unsafe in the country they grew up in. they had to change out of their cultural clothing after school so they don’t get harassed. they could never call japan their home even though its all they or their parents have ever known.
after the korean war. majority of the koreans in japan were originally south korean but since north korea had helped them maintain their culture and aided them financially, they now associate more with north korea compared to south korea.

economic: the chongryon, funded by the north korean governement built schools and businesses in japan, and sent some money back to north korea. it was worth 25 billion dollars but then following the abductions, it went bankrupt and couldn’t fund the korean schools anymore. the japanese government payed a good amount to keep the schools running in the beginning but then gradually started defunding the schools.
