International Migration
Permanent movement from one country to another.
Chain Migration
Pattern of migration that develops when migrants move along and through kinship links.
Step Migration
Migration to a distant destination that occurs in stages.
Christianity
The world’s largest religion. A universalizing religion based on the life and teachings Jesus in the first century. Hearth is in SW Asia, diffused primarily through relocation.
Islam
The second largest universalizing religion based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Found in SW Asia in the early/mid 7th century, diffused through conquest and relocation.
Remittance
Money migrants send back to family and friends in their home countries.
Circulation
Short-term, repetitive, or cyclical movements that recur on a regular basis, such as commuting to and from work.
Historical Migrations
Different periods in US history characterized by large migration streams by different groups/source areas. Initial settlement of the colonies (English or African slaves) mid-19th-early 20th cent. (mostly European), since the 1970s (Latin America and Asia).
Age of Exploration
1400-1600 Europeans started exploring the world in search of land, goods and materials.
Silk Road
Travel which connected China, India, and the Middle East. Traded goods and help to spread culture.
Counter-urbanization
A demographic and social process whereby people move from urban areas to rule areas.
Unauthorized Immigrant
People who enter a country without proper documents. Undocumented or illegal immigrants.
Asylum Seeker
Refugee seeking shelter and protection and once they from another state.
Crusades
Military attempts by European Christian King’s to free the holy land from Muslim control During the period from about 1100 - 1300 AD.
Constantinople
Now known as Istanbul, Turkey, it was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire then the Byzantine Empire. Fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, cutting off the Holy Land and Asia from Europe, inspiring exploration for new trade routes. Has a very desirable situation on the Bosporus and Black Sea.
Resources
Materials found in the earth that people need and value. Anything that is used to produce goods or services.
Uneven Development
The gap in economic conditions between regions because of globalization of the economy.
Placelessness
Loss of uniqueness of a place in the cultural landscape. Many places looking the same.
Manifest Destiny
Belief that the US was meant to extend from coast to coast during the 19th century.
Sustainability
Using resources in ways that do not harm ecological systems that support human existence.
Global Climate Change
Changes in the average weather that occurs in an area over a period of years or decades; concept started in the later part of the 20th century. Scientists generally contend that the changes are caused by human activity. Debate remains as to what/if anything can and should be done about it.
Demography
The scientific study of population characteristics.
Anatolian Hearth
Sedentary farmer thesis. Colin Renfrew’s theory that Proto-Indo-European language family originated in modern-day Turkey and diffused as a result of agricultural exchange among people in about 6000 BC.
Kurgan Warrior
Nomadic Warrior Theory. Marija’s Gimbutas’ theory of the first Proto-Indo-Euopean speakers came from the steppes of central Asia, diffusing language through conquest about 4000 BC.
